Edwardian/Teens Gem

Costume Page

I purchased this parasol in a lot of three for only $25. The photos of the lot were not entirely clear, nor were the parasols described well, but I decided to take my chances since the price was so low. Little did I know what I gem I was getting. This beautiful parasol has those rare turned out ribs, where the tip of the rib bends upward. So darling and so unexpected! I will really have to do this one justice when I recover it.

As far as the basic mechanism of the parasol goes, everything is in working order but, of course, is in desperate need of a good cleaning. The braided strap and tassel also look pretty good and probably just need a bit of tlc to be nearly as good as new. Most of the cover is in tatters, but that is to be expected.

The original cover seems to have been a silk taffeta with one inch wide stripes. Half the strips are quite obviously black, but the other color is difficult to decipher. It's currently a sort of light brown color, but I suspect it may have been white at one point in time. I may try to clean it up a bit and see if I can figure it out. This fabric was bordered with a solid black fabric that, if silk, is quite a bit sturdier than the striped fabric, as it has survived intact.

So, if anyone sees any black and something, one inch striped silk taffeta, let me know!
