Dotted Swiss Delight

This is yet another costume that has been running around in my costume obsessed brain for several years. I already have the fabric, but simply haven't found the time or an event to which it can be worn. I've finally just decided that it must be made (especially since for the next couple of years, I'm focusing on using my fabric stash for new projects). Plus, there may be a GBACG event next year to which I can wear this dress.

The pattern: Although the reviews for this Past Patterns Dainty Gown 101 are a bit mixed, it's just too beautiful to pass up. I love the train and ruffles and the overwhelming femininity of it. So, though it may drive me absolutely nuts, I'm determined to make it. (FYI--I think this pattern is now out of print. I had a tough time finding it, but managed to get one of the last copies from Patterns of Time.)

I'll also need to make another Edwardian corset using Past Patterns 106. I absolutely loved my first corset, which has been sold since it no longer fits.

I'll probably need one or two more Truly Victorian petticoats. The pattern creats a wonderfully full hem with a nicely fitted front waist.

I'll also need a corset cover, which I will possibly use Simplicity for.

The fabric: I found a pretty decent immitation dotted swiss at Joann's a while back. It really is a light, sheer cotton, but the dots don't appear to be part of the fabric but some nondescript substance added on top. While the fabric won't pass authenticity muster upon close inspection, it's close enough for me. The great thing about the fabric is that I managed to get two bolts of the stuff with my coupons; that means plenty of fabric for all those froofy ruffles!

I will, however, need to purchase fabric for the topmost petticoat and corset cover, since these will show a bit through the semi-transparent cotton. I'll probably also use this fabric for a hem-guard/dust ruffle.

Accessories: The major inspiration for this gown was a delightful hat I purchase at Costume College a few years back. It reminded me of the hats worn in a recent film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and though it cost me a pretty penny, it was simply too pretty to pass up.

I also have a couple different parasols that I'd like to work on recovering, either of which would go well with this dress. The catch is that I'm trying to find materials that are as close to the original covers as possible, so until I find suitable fabrics, those parasols are on hold. If I can't get either of these done before I want to wear the dress, I'll carry this one that I have already recovered.

To do:

Combinations

Corset

Princess slip

Bodice

Skirt

Parasol

Well, I finally have an event coming up that will hopefully help motivate me to get started on this dress. The GBACG is holding an Edwardian Tea in February. Now, since I have a ton of costumes planned for next year, I'd really like to get this one out of the way before all the craziness of CostumeCon starts up.
