Veil of Roses
What a fabulous book! Of course, I’m starting to get the feeling that I tend to gravitate towards books by and about women. Sorry, I can’t help myself. I’m especially interested in books that deal with women from cultures other than my own, women who don’t enjoy the freedom that I’ve had and have expected since my birth, essentially.
Veil of Roses follows a young woman’s journey from Iran to America to visit her older sister who now lives there. On a visitor’s visa, she has three months to find a good (or at least decent) Persian man to marry so that she does not have to return to Iran. While I found the romance intriquing, her adjustment to living in America, to living without fear, was much more fascinating. As an American, and as a Christian, it horrifies me that in some countries, individuals live in constant fear for their lives, afraid that some mistake, some slip, will result in punishments more severe than most Americans even imagine.
Anyway, it is a wonderful book. Well written and well developed. Highly recommended.
