I'd love to read what you you have to say about your reading. Actually, I often find it easier to comment on a post that's more rambling or discusses a particular passage than on a review, unless I happen to have read the reviewed book. :)

Of course, I would post this just before reading a series that instantly became one of my all time favorites. So, add to the list The Hunger Games series.

It's official: Alabama Moon won in the statewide voting. Sort of makes me question my ability to determine whether or not kids will like a particular book.

Great movie overall although the short story/book has a few points that I would have loved to have seen in the movie i.e the relativity of the terms "normal" and "monster".

I'm going to agree that most movies which show prayer are showing it for the reasons that you suggest - to show how futile prayer is and how ludicrous Christians are. This time I feel that the prayer was shown and heard so that the viewer would have the idea that the main character and his family were ones of faith and to show how close they were to each other. It was a great moment in the film which I found to be very moving even though I'm not of the Christian faith.

And not to sound snarky but the phrase is "faint of heart" not "feint of heart". Sorry 8)

I watched it much more than a decade ago - which would put me far before school age. I had remembered seeing a movie about a unicorn and pretty much being in love with it when I was little. I stumbled into it at my local library and borrowed it but I unfortunately can't remember it well enough to give an opinion.

The other night I looked it up on Wikipedia and found that it's a novel that happens to be pretty deep - so I intend to read it at some point.

The Last Unicorn has been one of my favorite books since I was a teenager (30 years ago). I first read it then and have read it several times since, and have always gotten something new from reading it, each time.
If you love it, delve in and soak up all you can. Don't let other people's opinions get in the way of YOU appreciating what speaks to you.

Having said that about other people's opinions, I'll give you mine: I think The Last Unicorn is one of those rare stories that contains truth and real beauty as well as an entertaining story. Although it is a "fantasy" novel, I see it as reflecting a deeper and more luminous aspect of life, one that is usually hidden to the "ordinary" eye. I think comparisons to other books, and categorizations, just cloud the issue and make it easier for people to talk about things without actually taking the time to really read and absorb what might be there for them. I hope you stick with your feelings and keep alive the impulse that made you love "The Last Unicorn".

I can see why a college prof. might want to teach this book. The author certainly is innovative in his narrative technique, and there is quite a twist at the end. In the long run, though, as a student, I'd be a bit frustrated if I was required to read this one.

I'd highly recommend passing your copy on to someone who wants to have their imagination assaulted and their heart torn out. You are so right--let's move on to something a bit happier or at least worthier of our attention. It may be time for a bit of Jane Austen therapy. :)
