I’ve been away for a bit, but you probably gathered that with the gap in posts. That, of course, does not mean I have not been doing something or other with yarn. I brought the Herringbone Rib socks with me to San Diego; there was plenty of down time during the conference to work on it. In fact, I was finished with it by the middle of the week. That means that I have officially finished my first ever pair of knitted socks. Yay!

During the rest of the week, I restarted my Vogue stockings. I’m having a much easier time with the lace pattern so far this time around, but I also haven’t gotten very far yet, so maybe I’m jumping the gun to say that.

This week, I’m on a road trip down the coast of California and have brought the Log Cabin baby blanket with me. Since I’m doing most of the driving, I haven’t had much time to work on it, but it is coming along nicely. I should have some photos to show off once I get home. (Would you believe that I remembered my camera, but not the USB cable?) I really love working with this organic cotton; it isn’t soft to the touch like some yarns, but as a finished garment it just has this sort of cush to it that I think will be perfect for a baby blanket. Plus, the colorway is pretty awesome. I can’t wait to show you.

I guess that applies to knitting as well. I’ve been doing a ton of knitting this past week, trying to get the Log Cabin Baby Blanket done before I leave town for a conference. (It is too big of a project to pack in my luggage, unless I want to wear the same clothes for an entire week.) Unfortunately, when I woke up this morning, my right hand was in quite a bit of pain.

I’ve managed to figure out what I’m doing to cause the muscle fatigue, so I’ll have to be careful and maybe adjust my grip a bit in the future. For now, no knitting until the hand feels better. I’m hoping I’ll only be out of commission for the weekend, otherwise, I’m not sure what I’m going to do for an entire week at a conference…um…twiddle my thumbs?

I’ll bring a few projects with me, in anticipation that I’ll be fine in no time. I’ll be taking the Spanish Moss Coat because it is small (or at least squishes), plus it will give me one crochet project in case my hand is still giving me a bit of trouble. I’ll also bring my Herringbone Rib Sock to finish and the Vogue stocking to restart. Should be plenty to keep me busy.

I’m so proud of myself…I successfully completed my first knitted sock, kitchener stitch and all! And here is the result…

One sock down

As you can see, it’s a little on the short side, but as I mentioned before, I was concerned about it fitting any higher on my calf, so this works just fine. Plus, it meant that I finished more quickly, which I think is a good thing for my first sock project–sort of boosts the confidence, if you know what I mean.

I have quickly moved on to the second sock and am working my way down the leg portion as I type. (Well, not literally as I type, but right before I started typing and as soon as I finish up here.)

Well, the Aragon Tunic is mostly done. All the crocheting is at any rate. I still need to sew the ribbon to the inside of the belt, add the snap, and sew on the decorative button. Probably not going to happen tonight, however, since it is already 11:30.

After wrapping up the last of the crocheted part of the belt, I was really itching to start a new project. I’ve got this lovely wool that I want to use to make a cardigan, but the thought of working with it in today’s heat was a little unbearable. Plus, I haven’t really settled on a pattern yet. (I had originally used the yarn to knit a sweater, but it turned out WAY too big and had to be frogged. I also realized that the wool was a little too scratchy to work as a pullover.) After browsing patterns for almost an hour, I buckled down and decided to work on one of the numerous projects I already have in progress.

So, it was back to the Herringbone Rib sock. Today I successfully turned my first heel. Woohoo! I’m on a roll with developing my knitting skill set. So, it’s actually starting to look like a sock. I also got a chance to try on what I’ve got so far. It’s a little snug getting the upper part of the sock around my heel, but once it’s on it feels good.

Here’s a picture of the sock before I started on it today.

Herringbone Rib Sock

I needed something to keep my hands busy while I block the Aragon Tunic, so I cast on to the Herringbone Rib Socks. I know I should be working on those lace stockings, but I decided to frog the progress I had made on the first one. My cables were going the wrong way, and while I tried for several days to be okay with that, it just wasn’t working. So, rather than launch right back into a stocking pattern that would take me forever and a day, I decided to start the shorter, easier Herringbone.

Good call. The pattern was easy to memorize and quick to knit. I’m already on the heel of the first sock. Of course, the smallest double points I had on hand were 2, so I went ahead and used those, knitting the smaller size and hoping that the extra width will end up perfect for my wide feet. It also means that I’m cutting back on some of the length, going more by measurement rather than by number of rows. I’m also being a very good girl and keeping a log of all the changes in row numbers, so that I can duplicate it on the second sock. Yay me! So far, I’m loving them; they should be nice and cozy for when the weather turns cold again.
