Let’s Try Posting For a Change

I really need to get back into the swing of posting on a regulary basis again.

So, things aren’t so great right now.  I came down with a really weird sort of cold this week.  I bravely fought it off for a few days and then took Thursday and Friday off of work.  I feel kind of bad that I did, because I probably could have soldiered through, plus it means that I’ve burned through my last two sick days.  So much for saving those up.  It did help to take Thursday off, though, because K had gum surgury and I had to pick him up afterwards.  I also managed to get a bit of housework done; I’m working on getting the spare room cleaned out for a cat we are going to be taking care of for a month or so.

In other news, my RIF notice arrived today.  Actually, the district sent me two copies–on regular mail and the other certified.  I guess they really wanted to make sure I knew I was laid off.  At first I was trying to think up some whitty puns with this being over kill, or something to that effect, and the I was struck by the irony.  They are laying me off because of budget cuts, and they have even been saying that they are going to start charging for teachers to keep small refridgerators and microwaves in their classrooms, yet they sent out double RIF notices–all those extra copies (when the schools are out of paper) and extra postage.  Kind of hits a nerve that their syrupy sweet “oh, we are so sorry to lose you and hope we will be able to recind this notice” just can’t manage to cover up.  You know, everyone is experiencing tough times right now–but you cancel the cable, you don’t quit paying the electricity bill, you know?  Most of us individually know how to tighten our budgets when necessary, but it seems to be a skill set that is entirely lacking and the district, state, and even federal level.  Now, if us coupon clipping hordes could have a whack at the state budget, we’d have those politicians running for cover as their salaries and pensions took the brunt of the attack.

Okay, off soapbox.  I’m sure I’ll be fine in the long run.  Of course, I really need to start snooping around for other possible jobs…I’m just not sure I want to keep looking in education.  Besides, the only school districts that will be hiring this year will be the ones that are absolutely desperate and that no teacher in her right mind really wants to teach in.  Not sure what else I could do…at least not that would earn me a comparable salary.  Right now working at a book store sounds like a blast, but entirely unrealistic when it comes to paying the mortgage.

But, to get off a rather depressing topic, K and I attacked our back yard today.  It has gotten entirely overgrown in the past few months.  The front did too, but we worked on that a couple of weekends ago, and it is looking much better now.  We usually kind of ignore the back yard, since no one ever sees it.  That also means that we don’t water back there, so the lawn pretty much just dies during the summer and we don’t have much to maintain after that.  It just makes the spring that much more work, since we aren’t used to having to do anything other than pick up the windfall from our fruit trees.  So, we got about half the work done out there that it needs, and will have to spend another few hours taking care of all the weeds next weekend. Ugh.
