Day Two
Just a quick update. Our kitty guest is currently entrenched in the spare room, which is an improvement since he first got here. His mommy dropped him off around 7 this evening. I had just made dinner so we all sat around the dining room table eating and chatting. After dinner, we started looking around for Bill. We spent the next twenty minutes looking around for Bill to no avail. We looked absolutely everywhere, even behind doors that had been closed all day, and outside just in case he had slipped by when K had come back from getting things out of the car, with no luck whatsoever.
Finally, his mommy had to leave and all we could do was hope that Bill would turn up. She kept apologizing for the trouble her cat was causing, but I felt terrible about losing her cat before she’d even stepped out the door. After she left, K and I continued to ransack the house and immediate vicinity. I even broke out a can of tuna and made K walk around outside with it–he was like the pied piper but none of the cats following him was Bill.
Eventually, we had to admit defeat. If he was outside, all we could do was hope that he would manage to find his way back to the right house. If he was inside, his hunger would eventually coax him out of hiding. So, K and I sat down and continued watching a movie on TV.Â
About twenty minutes later, the cat dropped out of the chimney! I kid you not. He was completely covered in soot and looked startled to see us. He hissed and started to slink off towards the kitchen (probably because of the tuna smell). Fortunately, when I started to walk towards him, he made a beeline for the second bedroom, which was exactly where I wanted him, and I quickly shut the door. We called his mommy right away to let her know that her Bill is alright and to tell her that we are going to rename him Santa.
He is still quite out of sorts, but he did let me pet him a few minutes ago. He can’t really decide what he wants right now–he was rubbing up against me like he wants attention, but he was growling and hissing while he did it. Hopefully, he will calm down enough by tomorrow to let me brush some of the soot out of his coat…maybe even a bath in a few days if we get some warm weather.
